The Pan Handler: The Life of a Cast-Iron Collector

In the South, our cast iron has often been passed down for generations. It comes with a box of well-stained recipe cards and a history worn into its slick seasoning. The pieces that Mary finds also have history, though we can only daydream of the meals they have seen. Mary enjoys thinking of the stories these pieces carry, and finds joy in restoring neglected finds and giving them a future. In fact, Mary believes that is a common characteristic of cast-iron collectors—they love to give a piece new life.

Restoration takes time and effort, which, along with the rarity of the pieces, tends to make some of Mary’s collection a little high-priced. This doesn’t scare off people most of the time—many come to her website willing to pay a higher price for a high-quality piece. Chefs and home cooks alike purchase her pans and often fill her website with appreciative testimonials.
